The Temple Without Lamps is a supernatural horror novel set in 2010 in Wuxikou, a remote town in southern China. Poor high school student Mo Xiaoye has been told since childhood that his mother, Zhou Qin, died in childbirth. But on a rainy night, a monk named Liaochen from the Temple Without Lamps tells him that “his mother is still alive,” revealing a family fortune worth a small fortune as well.
Determined to uncover the truth, Mo Xiaoye sneaks off to the gloomy, eerie Temple Without Lamps, hiding his plans from his father, Mo Jianqiang, who is heavily addicted to smoking. Sunlight never reaches the temple, the worshippers move stiffly, and a faceless wooden idol sits on the altar. As Mo Xiaoye investigates, he discovers that his father has been hiding old belongings and secrets from the Zhou family. The identity of the monk Liaochen, his mother's fate, and the family's “disastrous fire” from years ago gradually intertwine into a terrifying mystery, as obsession and fear spread through the cold shadows of the temple.
