Echoes of White Noise

In New Babylon, a vast city shrouded in eternal neon and ceaseless rain, emotions have long since become commodities that can be quantified, bought, and erased. Humanity connects to the Eden network through the “Heart Cocoon” system, experiencing perfectly tailored virtual emotions, while genuine feelings are treated as “system bugs” in need of repair.

Ling Xiu is a top-tier “memory cleaner.” His job is to dive into the depths of other people’s minds and remove painful, forbidden, or inconvenient memory fragments. He has long since grown numb to it, like a precise surgeon calmly cutting into other people’s souls, until he receives an ordinary cleanup assignment: erase the final memories of a tech tycoon who died by suicide.

In the target’s fading memories, Ling Xiu accidentally touches a piece of data that should not exist: a single, warm, real tear. Behind that tear lies a primordial emotion that has never been encoded, known as “sorrow.” Like a virus, it instantly infects Ling Xiu’s long-dormant heart.

To uncover the truth behind the tear, Ling Xiu sets out on a dangerous path against the current. He discovers that the supposed “suicide” conceals a vast conspiracy, and that Eden, which proclaims itself humanity’s paradise, is built on countless “White Noisers” stripped of their genuine emotions. Hunted and betrayed, he is forced to choose between a false dream and a cruel reality. And the mysterious woman who always appears at critical moments: why do her eyes hold the same light as that tear?
