Nirvana in a Sea of Debt

Lin Yuhui was once the owner of a company and a member of the urban middle class. When the global financial crisis severed his business connections, he was buried in debt overnight and eventually went bankrupt. The court seized all his assets. Worse still, he was plunged into the nightmare of loan sharks and illegal debt collection. The collectors used every means at their disposal, from violent visits to threats and intimidation, and even dragged his family into it. Debt-collection letters arrived at his hometown village like snowflakes, leaving him socially disgraced and subjected to the ridicule and contempt of relatives and neighbors. His marriage and family fell apart, and everyone turned against him. In the depths of utter despair, only his young son remained by his side.

For his child’s sake, Lin Yuhui had to pull himself back to his feet from the mire. By studying the classics of Chinese thought, including the Dao De Jing, the Analects, the Book of Changes, The Art of War, and Wang Yangming’s philosophy, he continually broadened his understanding and tempered his character. In time, he grasped the underlying principles, combined them with modern business thinking, and seized the opportunities of the age. Not only did he repay his enormous debts, he was reborn, just as his name suggested, emerging from hardship to shine more brilliantly than ever. He attained greater wealth and dignity in life and truly turned his fortunes around.

Note: The name Lin Yuhui is more than a symbolic substitution. The meaning of Yuhui, “to shine” or “radiance,” deeply echoes the protagonist’s story of emerging reborn after being tempered by hardship and achieving new glory, enriching the story’s symbolism and emotional impact.
