Ximen Qing: The Ups and Downs of a Business Magnate

Ximen Qing, a local ruffian in Qinghe County, refuses to settle for an ordinary life. Starting out in the medicinal herb trade, he rides the tides of commerce in the mid-to-late Ming dynasty. Cunning and ruthless, he swallows up his competitors and curries favor with officials, transforming himself from a common street thug into a tycoon who controls the local economy. He moves between Pan Jinlian's seductive charms and Li Ping'er's wealth, as rivalry in his household intertwines with cutthroat business battles. At the height of his power, his mansion is imposing, dignitaries surround him, and his businesses span prefectures. But once the bubble of collusion between officials and merchants bursts, former allies turn against him, enemies close in, and his vast commercial empire teeters on the brink of collapse. From street thug to tycoon and finally to utter ruin, Ximen Qing's life is a Ming dynasty tale of commerce, desire, power plays, and struggle. The novel vividly recreates Ming-era business and social life. Through its dramatic twists and turns, it explores how greed can lead people to ruin or redemption and reveals the timeless law that all things decline after reaching their peak.
