Lin Wei, a sensitive, introverted senior at an art academy, has grown used to shutting herself away because of her family background. Her paintings are often filled with dark, muted colors. By chance, she meets Gu Xun, the librarian at her neighborhood library. He was once a promising graduate student in architecture, but withdrew from the world after his younger sister died unexpectedly.
Gu Xun notices Lin Wei always painting in a corner. Starting with small acts of kindness, like offering her a tissue or sharpening her pencil, he slowly enters her world. He shares his sister’s sketches and encourages Lin Wei to overcome her emotional barriers, helping her escape the prison of her own isolation. With Gu Xun’s guidance, Lin Wei gradually brings brighter colors into her art and learns to make peace with the past. Their feelings blossom through a secondhand book sale, walks together on rainy nights, and the turmoil surrounding her graduation exhibition. They become the light that brightens each other’s dark pasts.
After graduation, Lin Wei signs with an art museum, but must choose between an invitation to exhibit in distant Beijing and the thought of leaving Gu Xun behind. In the end, she returns to what first inspired her. Together, she and Gu Xun turn a corner of the library into a community art studio and offer free art classes to local children, passing their warmth on to others. Along the way, Lin Wei resolves the rift with her father, while Gu Xun emerges from the shadow of losing his sister.
On a rainy night when the studio roof leaks, they promise to marry. They hold a simple wedding beneath a courtyard full of sunflowers. After their daughter Xiaoyang is born, their family feels complete. They continue running the studio with her, watching generation after generation of children discover joy through art. Ten years later, the studio has become a “waystation for light” in the community. Lin Wei and Gu Xun still walk hand in hand, writing a warm life story of “moving toward the light, never stopping.”
