Journey to the West: A Plain-Language Translation

Journey to the West, written by Wu Cheng’en during the Ming dynasty, is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of China. Centered on Tang Sanzang and his disciples’ journey to the West to obtain the scriptures, it tells the story of the stone-born Sun Wukong, who escorts Tang Sanzang alongside Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing through the Eighty-One Tribulations. They defeat demons such as the White Bone Spirit and Red Boy, and ultimately obtain the true scriptures. The novel created classic characters such as the rebellious Wukong and the good-natured Bajie. Through fantastical adventures, it alludes to the path of spiritual cultivation and the realities of society, blending romantic imagination with philosophical depth.

This complete modern-language translation faithfully recreates the original. It preserves the episodic chapter structure and poetic rhythms while rendering the archaic vernacular in accessible prose. It vividly presents the fantastical battles between gods and demons, while explanatory notes preserve cultural concepts such as the “Five Elements and Eight Trigrams.” Modern readers can easily appreciate the charm of classical literature and experience Wukong’s growth from the Great Sage Equal to Heaven to the Victorious Fighting Buddha, along with the Eastern wisdom that “the mind itself is the source of demons, and cultivating the mind is the way to subdue them.”
