A Plain-Language Sequel to Journey to the West

Fetching the true scriptures isn't the end. It's the start of another tribulation! As the four master and disciples head east, the Buddha declares that "the murderous aura in your weapons has yet to fade" and confiscates every divine weapon, including the Golden Cudgel and the Nine-Toothed Rake.

The scripture-seeking party returns empty-handed and faces unprecedented hardships:

• Sun Wukong still has his Seventy-Two Transformations, but struggles against demons using wave after wave of attacks.

• Zhu Bajie's greedy, lazy nature resurfaces, repeatedly putting him on the verge of falling into illusory traps.

• Sha Wujing carries the burdens and leads the way, protecting his master from tribulations as he gradually realizes that "even without a staff, one can still practice Zen."

• Tang Sanzang carries the true scriptures, making him the focus of all three realms as dark forces gather.

The return journey proves ten times more dangerous than the journey west! Demon kings defeated long ago join forces to take revenge, old grudges from Heaven give rise to hidden schemes, and even the words in the scriptures turn into inner demons...

See how the Great Sage outwits the "Hundred Demon Formation" without his iron cudgel, and watch Bajie realize that "discipline is armor" without his rake. When the Golden Headband no longer binds the mind, and the precious staff becomes a mirror in the heart, the final Eighty-One Tribulations turn out to be about one thing: letting go.
