The Hyacinth Years: From Shattered Mirrors to Returning Tides

Selling point: a stand-in from the start, a groveling reconciliation in the end. She teaches him to love by leaving; he spends the rest of his life building a lighthouse for her. Lin Xiangwan has been alone since childhood, with only her elderly grandmother for company. She is gentle and easygoing. Shen Shiyan, an elite from Beijing’s social circles, is cool and reserved, his heart forever locked around the memory of his beloved, who died young. He cannot let go of his obsession. By chance, he meets Lin Xiangwan, whose features resemble the woman in his memories. Shen Shiyan keeps her by his side and spoils her endlessly for three years, showing her favoritism at every turn. Everyone believes she is the exception, the one he truly cherishes. But his tenderness is nothing more than a hollow illusion, a vessel for his obsession. All that happiness shatters on Shen Shiyan’s birthday. Six weeks pregnant, Lin Xiangwan closes her art gallery and makes a cake with her own hands, then hurries to his birthday banquet, full of joy and hopeful they will spend every year together. Before she can even enter the banquet hall, she hears Shen Shiyan admit that he keeps her around only because she is pure, well-behaved, gentle, and easy to handle, making her the perfect emotional substitute. Those few words crush the sincerity and devotion she has given him for three years. Heartbroken, Lin Xiangwan leaves her pregnancy test results behind, severs every tie, and quietly disappears. Three years pass. In a coastal town in Fujian Province, Lin Xiangwan lives peacefully with her adorable daughter and runs a flower shop, bright and composed, glowing in her own right. Shen Shiyan, finally awakened to what he has done, is consumed by endless regret and searches for her across mountains and seas. Stripped of his former pride and privilege, he humbly sets out to make amends. “Xiangwan, I owe you my life, and I owe myself a true heart.” His long road to winning her back finally makes him understand: she was never the stand-in. He was the one trapped in the past, unwilling to move on. A returning boat need not cling to its old shore. Only two people staying true to each other and letting love take root can make a home for the rest of their lives.
