The Hidden Dragon's Spy: The Story of Liu Gensheng

This is a work of fiction. Set in Shanghai from the Battle of Shanghai in 1937 through the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japan, it tells the espionage saga of Liu Gensheng, an inheritor of Bajiquan. On the surface, he is a young instructor at a martial arts school in the French Concession. In truth, he is an underground agent codenamed “Dragon Shadow.” With martial arts as his blade and ingenuity as his shield, he navigates between Ichiro Hayakawa, head of the Japanese Special Service Agency, and the den of the Wang Jingwei regime’s notorious “76” intelligence agency. In the dark nights of the isolated city, he delivers vital intelligence and eliminates traitors to save the nation. His master, Chen Tieshan, whose iron will never bends, and his beloved, Lin Wanqiu, whose tenderness and conviction sustain him, become his pillars of strength amid the bloody struggle. He uses coded signals hidden in his boxing techniques to pass along secret documents, and pressure-point techniques to stage “accidents” that eliminate traitors. From outwitting the enemy in the isolated city to fighting for survival after its fall, Liu Gensheng repeatedly comes close to being exposed, yet escapes danger through his martial prowess and resourcefulness. Well versed in *The Art of War*, he employs counterintelligence and turns enemies against one another, tearing apart the enemy’s webs time and again. Victory finally comes, but at a terrible cost. Liu Gensheng disappears into the crowd, leaving only the fierce techniques of Bajiquan to silently speak of a people’s undying spirit. This sweeping epic blends Chinese martial arts, historical suspense, and the radiance of human nature, paying tribute to the unsung heroes who gave their lives to light the dawn.
