The Bankrupt Boss's Culinary Comeback

At forty, Chen Lei was once the proud owner of a successful hot pot chain. Then the pandemic and vicious competition sent him plummeting into hell: 800,000 yuan in debt, his marriage and family shattered, his father in urgent need of dialysis for kidney failure, and himself barely surviving by delivering takeout. On his worst day, he saw his daughter call his ex-wife’s “ideal man” Dad. Soup spilled from his insulated delivery bag down his trousers, like his dignity crumbling into dust.

At rock bottom, after collapsing from hunger at a vegetable market, he unexpectedly awakens a gift called “flavor empathy.” The moment he touches an ingredient, he knows the best way to cook it, and can even retrace how it grew. In his hands, rotten tomatoes roast into a perfect balance of sweet and sour, while misshapen potatoes make an irresistible, rich soup. Starting with a night-market stall, he turns overlooked, second-rate ingredients into a hit braised-food business and earns the first money he needs to save his father by paying for dialysis.

But the road to a comeback is full of obstacles: debt collectors at his door, rumors spread by competitors, a ruthless assault from tycoon Zhang Cheng, and his ex-wife’s icy mockery. Still, he holds on to those hands. They can bring nostalgia to life with tomatoes soaked in mountain spring water, heal stubborn illnesses with a traditional doctor’s medicinal soup, and help his daughter remember that “Dad makes the best beef brisket.”

From a tiny ten-square-meter shop to a publicly listed restaurant empire, he uses flavor to fight capital and sincerity to mend family bonds. When the sign for Chen’s goes up again at the site of his old failed business, Chen Lei finally understands: the most moving taste in everyday life has never been rare delicacies. It is the grit to stand back up after a fall, and the warmth of a family gathered around the table.
