The Chief Magistrate of the Court of Judicial Review and His Hapless Teammates

In Luoyang, the divine capital, prosperity hides a city teeming with eerie shadows.

Strange events plague Luoyang: someone at the ghost market is “consumed by ghostly flames,” a pleasure boat’s leading courtesan “dies with a smile,” a revered monk at an ancient temple “rings the bell and takes his own life,” and even paper dolls take to the streets with knives in the dead of night… The people live in terror, and talk of ghosts and gods is everywhere.

A book-obsessed temple judge who can’t tell oil from salt, a hot-tempered general who kills but never cleans up, a sharp-tongued coroner who only talks to corpses, and a quick-witted con artist who loves to sabotage her teammates: together, they’re the least reliable and most dependable detective team in the divine capital!

When Shen Yan of the Court of Judicial Review is ordered to take charge in a crisis, he can only think: Wait, something’s wrong here! He’s forced to team up with Lu Zhao, a brawny Imperial Guard whose motto is, “Who cares if it’s a demon or a monster? Take it down first!”; Su Wanqing, the icy coroner from the Ministry of Justice, who warns, “Stay away from my autopsy table!”; and Liu Yiyi, a con artist from the martial world whose motto is, “Leave it to me! No promises I won’t rip you off!”

Watch the divine capital’s detective squad unravel bizarre mysteries with wit, courage, and a bond strong enough to entrust their lives to one another, bringing justice to the dead and safeguarding the city.
