Love and Laughter in Hongshanao

Synopsis of The Couple Who Kept the Home Fires Burning in Hongshanao

In the 1970s, in Hongshanao, a northern Chinese village, the three Xia sisters, steady, family-minded Hongying; fiery, fiercely protective Chunyan; and quiet, refined Qiuyue, marry the three Gu brothers from the village: the iron-tough but honest Tieshuan, the quick-witted chatterbox Mugen, and the upright, stern Shidun. Just as the three couples begin to build a warm home together, village gossip turns their lives upside down. They muddle through hunting wild boars, work together seamlessly to build workshops, and fumble their way through trips to the county seat. They argue, fight, and fear, but through all the storms of the times, they never let go of one another’s hands.

From work-point ledgers to private businesses, from jars of pickled vegetables to freight trucks, from literacy classes to a village library, the three couples take root and grow like wild grass in Hongshanao, adapting to changing policies and turning misunderstandings into sweet wine and shared hardship into honey. When the spring breeze of the household responsibility system sweeps across the fields, when their homemade pickles appear on county store shelves, and when their children run off to school with bookbags on their backs, they finally understand: the best days aren’t built on earth-shaking vows, but on you handing
