A Catalog of Obsessions from Vengeful Spirits of the Old World

The Red Wedding Dress of Resentment

During the Republican era, Lin Wanqing is pregnant and eagerly awaiting her wedding to the man she loves, Zhang Jingming. But on the eve of their wedding, he and her close friend Liu Rumei lure her to an abandoned mansion and murder her for her family fortune. She dies full of hatred, her soul bound to that of the “ghost baby” she never got to deliver. Trapped on the banks of the River of Forgetfulness, she asks the same question day after day: why did the “husband” who betrayed her do it?

When the truth finally comes to light, love turns to bitter resentment. She returns to the mortal world with the ghost baby, tormenting her enemies with blood and tears. Shen Yanzhi, who secretly loved Wanqing, is also murdered by Zhang Jingming while investigating her death. His end is a gruesome one.

Only Shen Yanzhi’s black cat has the spiritual insight to break into the underworld and plead its case before the King of Hell. Taking pity on the two who suffered such cruel fates, the King of Hell defies heaven and grants them another chance at reincarnation. He also casts Zhang and Liu’s souls into hell, where they endure the tortures of all eighteen levels.

The red wedding dress stained with blood, the sobbing in the moonlit mansion: at last, through the cycle of karma, they become the promise of a new beginning. Good and evil are repaid in kind, the ill-fated lovers find their happy ending, and the betrayers are condemned to eternal torment.

Rabbit Head Blood

Gu Jingzhou is so consumed by work that he neglects his wife, Su Yuning, who suffers from depression, until she suffers a mental breakdown. One day, Su Yuning suddenly gets the idea to wash her children’s hair. When her illness flares up, she mistakes her younger son for a rabbit and hacks him to death, muttering, “Wash the rabbit’s head.” By the time her husband gets home, tragedy has struck: their son is dead, their daughter has fainted from the shock, and their family has been shattered, leaving nothing but endless regret and pain.

The Fragrance of Cat Bones

During a severe drought, the Zhou family’s cruelty to living creatures brings a cat demon down on them for revenge. The entire household is punished, and only their kindhearted little granddaughter, Nianci, survives. With the rescued animals at her side, she waits among the ruins for the rain to bring new life, witnessing how evil is punished and goodness gives hope room to grow.
