Jiang Ziya, the Father of Military Strategy

Jiang Ziya studied the Dao in Kunlun and understood the secrets of Heaven. In his seventies, he fished with a straight hook at the Wei River, where he met his destined lord, King Wen of Zhou, who appointed him Grand Preceptor. Jiang Ziya proposed a strategy to “overthrow Shang,” helping King Wen govern diligently and strengthen Xiqi. After King Wen’s death, King Wu succeeded him and built the Golden Terrace to appoint Jiang Ziya commander-in-chief of the campaign against Zhou, placing all three armies under his command.

Faced with the tyranny of King Zhou of Shang and the fortified passes blocking the way, Jiang Ziya devised a strategy of “winning people over with virtue and victories with wisdom”: ally with the righteous forces in the east and south, deter Chong Houhu in the north, and train elite troops at home. He personally founded a powerful force of three thousand Black-Armored “Tiger Braves” and revolutionized military tactics. At the decisive Battle of Muye, the Tiger Braves spearheaded the assault and tore through the Shang army. Jiang Ziya also incited the slaves to turn against their masters, ultimately winning against the odds. King Zhou burned himself to death, and the Shang dynasty fell.

After the Zhou dynasty was established, Jiang Ziya oversaw the creation of its founding institutions. He introduced the “feudal system,” granting lands to the royal clan and meritorious officials to protect the royal house, and established the “well-field system” to distribute farmland fairly and secure people’s livelihoods, laying the foundations for eight centuries of Zhou rule. Later, following Heaven’s decree, he built the Investiture Platform and used the Investiture List to appoint 365 righteous gods, establishing order in the Heavenly Court. Selflessly, he relinquished his own position and retired to his fiefdom in Qi. In his later years, he wrote The Six Secret Teachings, a masterwork combining governance, strategy, and the art of war. He was honored as the “Founding Ancestor of Military Thought.” His wisdom in fishing with a straight hook and his easygoing belief that “those who are willing will take the bait” became an enduring symbol of Chinese strategic culture.
