The Emperor’s Kasaya

In the final days of the Southern Qi, powerful ministers rule and members of the imperial clan scheme against one another. Xiao Yan, born into a collateral branch of the Lanling Xiao clan, is a gifted writer and brilliant strategist. He rises through military service to become a powerful regional commander based in Yongzhou. Witnessing a decaying court and a suffering populace, he finally takes up arms with the help of trusted friends and advisers such as Shen Yue and Fan Yun. He overthrows the corrupt Southern Qi dynasty and establishes the Liang Empire, becoming Emperor Wu of Liang.

At the start of his reign, Xiao Yan governs with diligence and devotes himself to the empire’s affairs day and night. Frugal and hardworking, he welcomes frank counsel, builds waterworks, and promotes education. Under his rule, Liang grows powerful and its culture flourishes, ushering in one of the Southern Dynasties’ rare golden ages. He is also immensely learned and prolific, with a particular mastery of Buddhist teachings. Yet as he grows older, this gifted ruler becomes increasingly devoted to Buddhism. He spends the empire’s wealth building temples and gives himself over to Tongtai Temple several times, draining the treasury as the government gradually falls into neglect. His excessive leniency toward imperial relatives and powerful clans leads to official corruption and mounting internal strife. In his final years, his judgment fails him. He trusts Hou Jing, a rebel general from the Northern Dynasties, and lets the wolf through the door. The resulting Rebellion of Hou Jing leaves the once-prosperous capital of Jiankang in ruins. At eighty-six, Emperor Wu is trapped in Taicheng and dies in misery, consumed by hunger and regret, leaving behind the tragic tale of an emperor and an empire that rose to greatness only to fall.
