The Great Sage Wukong, Victorious in Battle

The Great Sage Wukong, Victorious in Battle begins with an immortal ape born from the Heart of Heaven Stone, left behind when Nuwa mended the sky, and retells the timeless legend of Sun Wukong, the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. The story opens as the stone on Flower-Fruit Mountain splits and the Stone Monkey is born. He braves the Water Curtain Cave and claims kingship, then crosses the oceans in search of immortality and becomes a disciple of Patriarch Bodhi, mastering earth-shaking supernatural powers. After completing his training, he returns to the mountain, storms the Dragon Palace to seize the Golden-Banded Staff, and erases his name from the Book of Life and Death in the Underworld, earning renown throughout the Three Realms. The Celestial Court summons him, but grants him only the lowly post of Keeper of the Heavenly Horses. He rebels, declares himself the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, disrupts the Peach Banquet, and steals Laozi's golden pills. Even an army of a hundred thousand heavenly soldiers cannot subdue him. At last, the Buddha Tathagata imprisons him beneath Five Elements Mountain for five hundred years. Later, Guanyin guides him to become the disciple of Tang Sanzang, the pilgrim seeking the scriptures, and he sets out on the journey west. Along the way, he vanquishes demons and monsters: battling the Yellow Wind Demon, fighting the White Bone Demon three times, cleverly obtaining the Plantain Fan, clashing with the demons of Lion-Camel Ridge, and braving the Flaming Mountains... Through eighty-one trials, he remains loyal despite being repeatedly misunderstood, displaying both supernatural prowess and wisdom. In the end, he helps Tang Monk obtain the scriptures, attains enlightenment, and is bestowed the title Victorious Fighting Buddha. Yet his Buddha heart never extinguishes, and his wild nature endures. His legend lives on. In the traditional chaptered style, this book recounts the epic journey of the Stone Monkey from innocence to enlightenment, from rebellion to responsibility, as he breaks free of fate and makes his own destiny.
