If the Wind Remembers My Kiss

Lin Wanxing folded her terminal brain cancer diagnosis into a paper plane and threw it toward the ginkgo tree outside the hospital ward.

The first item on her bucket list was audacious and heartrending: “Kidnap a man in a moon-white robe and have a thirty-day countdown romance.”

That night, in an abandoned concert hall, Shen Tingbai, a Republican-era musician formed from moonlight, seized her wrist.

A kiss carrying the chill of dew branded her lips. As her heart monitor suddenly blared, her withered lifeline unexpectedly stretched by twenty-four hours.

“Forgive my rudeness, miss.” His sleeves swept through the flowing light of the stars. “For every day I extend your life, I must take one of my memories.”

Lin Wanxing licked her bitten lip and laughed through her tears. “What a bargain... Kiss me thirty times, and I'll stay with you until the moonlight burns out!”

And so the forbidden compass began to turn:

→ He dipped his finger in the Milky Way to teach her how to identify the stars on a 1923 chart. The engraving “Starbound” at the bottom of a bowl of sweet soup cut her fingertip;

→ On a carousel frozen at midnight, he kissed the frost from her eyelashes. “Look, I stole you your seventeenth sunrise”;

→ Until a yellowed newspaper shattered the dream: the prodigy musician Shen Tingbai, who died in 1943, had clutched an undelivered ginkgo bookmark to his dying breath. On its back were her words: “Tingbai, wait for the wind to kiss you for me.”
