The Miao Frontier: Two Heroes Conquer the Southern Sky

In the waning years of the Song and the early years of the Yuan, the southwestern frontier was a land of shifting tides and hidden dangers. The Miao tribes of the Thirty-Six Caves in southern Guizhou rose up against oppressive rule. Zhang Hui, a Han official serving the Yuan, was entrusted with a mission in a time of crisis. Taking his son Zhang Huan with him, he led his troops into the Miao lands of Pengshui. On this soil, steeped in Wu-Nuo culture and stained with blood and tears over cinnabar, father and son faced suspicion from the Yuan court and centuries of bitterness between Han and Miao. Wielding the Zhang family motto, the Three Character Classic, as their blade, they lived by the words: “Keep a kind heart and walk the righteous path. Do not provoke trouble, but do not fear it.” Through battle and bloodshed, they carved out a path to unity.

Zhang Hui broke the economic blockade by replacing the cinnabar tribute with a tea tax, and bridged cultural divides with a medical text for both Miao and Han. Yet he died of illness in Pengshui on his way home, leaving behind a blood-written family testament. Zhang Huan carried on his father’s wishes. He outwitted plots involving poison and sorcery, thwarted schemes to curtail his power, married a Miao woman, opened schools, and established the “Three Ordinances of Sizhou.” He fused Han military discipline with ancient Miao teachings into a spiritual emblem of “Han and Miao as one.” From the blood-moon rites at the Wujang ferry to the alliance bonfire at the Jiuli altar, from the stone stele dividing profits at the cinnabar mines to the family-motto screen at the Sizhou government office, two generations of father and son wrote the legend of “Guarding the Southern Heavens” with swords for brushes and blood for ink, across the mountains and rivers of the Miao lands.

Blending the turbulent sweep of history with the legends of a people, this novel follows the heroic journey of the Zhang family father and son to portray the political struggles and cultural coexistence of the southwestern frontier in the late Song and early Yuan. The lights in Pengshui’s stilt houses, the bustle of market days in the Miao lands, and the roar of the Wujang’s stone embankments all become footnotes to a family legacy. When silver crowns and jade pendants meet beneath the moonlight, and Han and Miao children read the Three Character Classic alongside the Ancient Songs of the Miao Lands, a spirit transcending ethnic boundaries is quietly born: the “Spirit of the Southern Heavens,” an everlasting monument protecting the people.
