Water Margin: A Transmigrator’s Mission to Uphold Heaven’s Will

In 2025, Zhang Ke, a history student at Nanjing University, unexpectedly transmigrates to Yun County in the late Northern Song dynasty, where he becomes a clerk in the county office. Faced with corrupt officials and a people plunged into misery, he wields modern knowledge as a blade and rewrites the plot of Water Margin: he cleverly changes the route of the birthday-gift convoy and teaches the recipe for a simple explosive. He proposes “equal land distribution and tax exemption,” transforming the Liangshan rebels from a bandit force into the beginnings of a regime that enacts new policies. He devises “three-three formation” tactics, improves firearm formations, and lays magnetic-triggered “thunderclap bombs” around the Liangshan Marsh stronghold. On the Julu Plain, his parabolic artillery devastates the Jin army’s armored cavalry, while in the drawn-out war against Fang La in Jiangnan, he puts into practice the principle that “the people’s livelihood is the key to military strength.”

From strategist in the plot to seize the birthday gifts to architect of the Dashun regime, Zhang Ke constantly walks the narrow gaps in history: he uses the promise of amnesty to build up strength, links up with steppe tribes through trade, and incorporates modern management principles into the ancient bureaucracy. He establishes separate ministries for public affairs, military affairs, and justice, each with its own duties, and makes land deeds guaranteeing “every farmer has land to till” the foundation of the new regime. When Song Jiang is crowned on Mount Tai, Fang La submits, and the Jin kingdom presents a peace treaty, Zhang Ke withdraws at the height of his success. He leaves behind Essentials of Governance and a stone stele inscribed with “Uphold Heaven’s Way,” then vanishes into the reeds of Liangshan Marsh.

Hundreds of years later, a bronze cannon at the ruins of Shuntian Prefecture, a fragment of Essentials of Governance from the Library Cave at Dunhuang, and a fountain pen found in the hollow of an old locust tree in Yun County come together to piece together the legend of a man from another time. He did not change the dynastic transitions recorded in the history books, but he planted the seed of the idea that “the people’s will is Heaven’s will” in the hearts of millions. “Uphold Heaven’s Way” thus changed from a slogan of the martial world into an enduring pursuit of justice through institutions.
