An Official’s Path in Honghuang: The Ledger of the Land’s Fortune

“You can read a person’s fortune from a battered old book? Red means disaster, gold means honor! When Chen Mu, a penniless wandering cultivator, was squatting outside the county office writing petitions for people, he happened to open the bloodstained Book of the Fortune of Mountains and Rivers. A cloud of black qi hung over the county magistrate’s head (he would die a violent death within three days), while golden light shimmered beside a wealthy young master’s temple (he was destined for an official post of the seventh rank). Chen Mu wrote ‘substitute death case’ in the book, and his fortune value rose by one. He broke into a haunted mansion at night, stole the wealthy man’s fortune, and infused it into himself. The next day, the county magistrate died suddenly, and Chen Mu took his vacant position as county clerk! In the waning days of the Great Shang, prehistoric beasts lurk in the forests and ancient altars awaken underground. Watch how this low-ranking clerk turns the people’s grateful prayers into stepping stones, climbs from the ninth rank to the Three Dukes, and grasps the fortune of Heaven and Earth in his hands!”
