Tears as Proof Before the Bodhi

The sea of tears shed by all beings is itself a place of enlightenment. Each tear is another tribulation of the mortal world. When seven-year-old novice monk Mingxuan molded a clay figure before the Buddha, every century-old lamp in Leiyin Temple went dark. His master left him a cryptic prophecy: “Only after you have gathered twelve tears of enlightenment will you learn that your own are salty.” Ten years later, he entered the mortal world carrying a coarse clay jar crisscrossed with spiderweb cracks, only to discover it was no magical vessel, but an urn holding the ashes of reincarnation. A king’s gilded tears splashed onto a ruined bridge; an overthrown emperor, hanging upside down, stained the Diamond Sutra with blood, and dragon patterns appeared in the jar’s cracks. Rouge corroded a blind musician to the bone as she snapped her pipa strings; blood and tears soaked a shard of jade taken from the palace, and the cracks turned into butterflies that revealed form and emptiness. In a hidden well, a tattooed salt worker wrote the Heart Sutra in blood on a bronze plate; his tears congealed into frost-salt, bearing the marks of laborers’ fingerprints. A girl sacrificed her severed arm to heaven; tears mixed with talisman ash summoned drought thunder, and clouds and lightning appeared on the jar in answer to the people’s thirst. A courtesan with sutras tattooed on her skin gouged out her eyes and wept vermilion; in her glass eyes, the truth was reflected: “Painted skin is hell”… A merchant’s tears, tainted by greed, melted a gold-devouring parasite into coppery grime; a historian who had cut out his own tongue shed bloody tears that revealed the words “regicide” on a stone stele; a deaf-mute drummer’s ears ran with blood, its roar shaking a silent Buddhist bell. The glassy tears of a nun who burned herself alive revealed the strings of a past-life qin; the icy tears of a general who massacred a city froze the edge of his Asura blade. At last, a little girl clutching a lamp soaked a monk’s back with blood and tears, and a red lotus of delusion bloomed. Mingxuan traversed all twelve tear tribulations, gathering the deepest pain of every living soul. When the spiderweb cracks in the jar finally shattered into glassy relics, the dust-sweeping monk reflected inside revealed his true form. Only when a drop of eave-water fell onto an old scar at the tiger’s mouth did Mingxuan realize the verse was a blade: “He who gathers tears will ultimately become one who dwells among them.” On the coarse clay figure picked up by a new novice, the handprint from his previous life still remained; the Soul-Severing curved saber was melted down into a bell-clapper to ferry souls across the world. And as the river of stars poured down like tears, dragon-patterned roof tiles, bloodied scorched-tail butterflies, salt-crystal sutra plates, and vermilion-painted human skin drifted amid the glowing dust…
