Charlie IX: A Night Parade of a Hundred Demons in Kyoto

An unsettling eeriness hangs in the air of Kyoto. The DODO Adventure Team arrives for summer vacation, only to encounter a “surprise” far beyond anything they imagined: the legendary “Night Parade of One Hundred Demons” has come early, and it’s completely out of control! An old umbrella hops through the alleys, a cracked teapot chases pedestrians, dolls in shop windows wear eerie smiles, a kappa steals phones, and a faceless woman wanders crossroads… The entire ancient capital descends into a bizarre, hilarious, yet perilous chaos. An ancient pottery shard that can “communicate between two worlds” becomes the key to solving the mystery. While fleeing a chatterbox floating abacus spirit, the adventure team accidentally enters the Hidden Realm, a land of monsters that overlaps with the present world. There, they meet a lost little Zashiki-warashi. It tells the team that the core of the “ancient artifact” that maintains the balance between the two worlds has been damaged, causing the “Laws of the Yokai” to collapse. Not only are humans suffering, but the yokai are miserable too. To quell this unprecedented “Yokai Calamity” and save Kyoto, the DODO Adventure Team must venture deep into the perilous Hidden Realm. They must cross a maze-like old manor guarded by Nariyō, solve riddles posed by the ill-tempered Umizatō, and dodge attacks from a rampaging Ushi-oni. They must also draw on the knowledge in Japanese Yokai Tales and the Night Parade of One Hundred Demons and follow the ancient “Laws of the Yokai”: use salt to ward off evil, bait kappa with cucumbers, and soothe tsukumogami with sincerity. At last, they will face the guardian, driven into a painful frenzy by the damaged core, in ancient ruins shrouded by a gigantic yokai willow
