The Unlucky Ghost Turns Out to Be a Judge

Wu Qian has been bound to the word “unlucky” ever since birth. She survived a string of near-death complications as a newborn, including having the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck, inhaling water, and rectal prolapse, and indirectly caused her parents’ deaths. From then on, misfortune followed her at every turn. From pneumonia at six months old to a terminal illness at thirty-nine, countless accidents haunted her, yet she miraculously survived them all, earning her the reputation of a “jinxed star.”

After her terminal diagnosis, Wu Qian begins “reporting in” at the underworld’s judicial office every night, at first assuming it is just a deathbed hallucination. Then the King of Hell reveals the truth: she was originally a judge in the underworld, but her soul fell into the River of Forgetfulness and she was accidentally reborn among the living. Her incomplete soul brought her all that bad luck. Now that her trials are nearly over, she must find a place of extreme yin to await the return of her soul.

When Wu Qian wakes to find the Book of Life and Death and the Judge’s Brush lying plainly on her bed, she realizes it was all true. After hurriedly putting her affairs in order, she returns to her rightful place at precisely noon, takes up the Book of Life and Death once more, and begins a whole new legend as a judge. How will her extraordinarily unlucky life among the living shape her path as a judge? What upheaval will her return bring to the underworld?
