A Little Landlord’s Dream of Joining the Army

Huang Meng, a poor university student, was interning at a Fortune 500 tech company in her junior year when she was killed in a robbery on her way home after a night shift. When she opened her eyes again, she had become Huang Shude, a landlord’s daughter in Yuexi Town, Huaguo. She awoke in the Huang family ancestral hall in 1966, amid the turmoil of Huaguo. Class struggle had taken her parents’ lives, the servants had run off with the family’s wealth, and all that remained to keep her company were Uncle Leng, the old steward, and Aunt Yun, the housekeeper. The sprawling estate and its land had all been confiscated.

Hoping to find a way forward, she went on one disastrous blind date after another, arranged by the old steward. Cheng Jia decisively cast aside the matches others had chosen for her and met Fu Xianliang, an officer visiting relatives in the town from the capital. He was tall and upright, with a resolute gaze, and the two hit it off.

In troubled times, marriage might be a refuge for a little landlord, as well as the start of a new journey. Huang Meng resolutely decided to marry Fu Xianliang, bringing all her dowry and hopes for the future with her as she joined the army. But Fu Xianliang had only recently enlisted and was still a squad leader, so he wasn’t yet entitled to have his wife join him. From landlord’s daughter to army wife, Huang Shude will join Fu Xianliang in writing a different kind of life amid turbulent times, searching for their own happiness and peace through war and hardship.
