The Yongle Encyclopedia was compiled during the Yongle era of the Ming dynasty under the direction of literary luminaries such as Jie Jin and Yao Guangxiao, at the successive orders of the Yongle Emperor, Zhu Di. It was an encyclopedia that brought together the finest works of ancient Chinese literature.

The complete work comprised 22,877 volumes (including 60 volumes of indexes, for a total of 22,937 volumes), contained in 11,095 books, with approximately 370 million characters.

It gathered seven to eight thousand works from throughout history, covering the classics, histories, philosophical writings, and literary collections. Its subjects included astronomy, geography, yin-yang, medicine, divination, Buddhist and Daoist scriptures, theater, crafts, and agriculture.

It encompassed almost the entire body of knowledge accumulated by the Chinese people over thousands of years, and was rightly considered the crowning achievement of ancient Chinese culture.
