The Soul Judge

A living soul with pale eyes, the only living person in the Underworld. Her pale eyes can see people’s sins, and her tears falling into the River of Forgetfulness can reveal their past. When the Underworld descends into a collapse of good and evil because someone tampered with the Book of Life and Death, she tears open a crack in the rules: blood on a school badge exposes fake evidence in a bullying case, ghostly shadows in medicinal dregs lead her to a crooked drug merchant, paper cranes folded from nursery rhymes break through a silencing curse, and chains and a bronze mirror reflect the lies behind domestic abuse. She snatches the brush from the Judge of the Underworld and demands repayment from the King of Hell. With chili-pepper soup from Meng Po and the Judge’s broken pen nib, her pale eyes write new laws between yin and yang: if procedural justice can’t save the wronged dead, then she’ll overturn the Book of Life and Death and establish justice anew!
