The Unfinished Ashes of Jinling

The Ashes of Jinling: The Weiyang Volume is a ten-volume epic of worldly life inspired by the characters of Dream of the Red Chamber. It carries on Cao Xueqin’s technique of planting subtle clues that bear fruit far in the future, while spinning a new tale around the fates of the Twelve Beauties of Jinling. Beneath the Jia family’s apparent revival, the novel lays out a surging undercurrent of unrest. Through the changing fortunes of three generations of the Rongguo household, it paints a portrait of a decaying bureaucratic system at the end of feudal society. Skillfully adapting the plain, direct style of Ming and Qing storybooks and reconstructing the classical setting with modern grammar, the author adds new narrative dimensions of political intrigue, commercial rivalries, and sharp-witted exchanges among women to the illusory world of the Red Chamber, where “truth becomes falsehood, and falsehood becomes truth.” Contemporary readers can savor the poetic life of the Grand View Garden while reflecting on humanity’s eternal struggle beneath the wheel of history.
