Find Me a College Girl to Be My Wife

When the Japanese invaded Nanjing, Chen Sihai escaped and fled to Hunan, where he was taken up into the mountains and became a bandit. He brainwashed himself with the idea that he was a bandit, hoping to forget that horrifying day in Nanjing. Having died once already, he no longer fears death. His mind even grows muddled, and he becomes recklessly bold, yet extraordinarily careful. He is a man with a deep sense of chivalry. When he goes down the mountain to abduct a wife, he meets She Han. He also meets Cheng Dan'an. These two people change the course of his life. He is a bandit, but also a lone hero. He moves alone through enemy territory, ending the lives and plans of his enemies. He saves people, too. His sense of justice inspires many and changes many lives. He makes many friends, even among the Japanese. But those friends eventually leave or die. He also meets someone so pure it is frightening, someone who stirs chaos in his heart. And he has enemies who are real, tangible people, not some abstract enemy. They are all thinking about the same question, searching for its answer. Why should farmers from one land put down their hoes and travel thousands of miles to another land to kill its farmers, or be killed by them? Also, during the War of Resistance, countless unsung heroes died in places no one knew about. I want to commemorate them. (If you know someone with a story like this, tell me and I’ll include it.) And in the Republican era, Lu Xun wrote about a society that devours people, along with the many other tragedies born of human nature. So this book is not an over-the-top power fantasy. It leans toward a literary style. Read it slowly and carefully, word by word. Much is left unsaid, and calls for reflection. One more thing: I picked the title on a whim at the time. I’ll change it later to A War Without Names.
