The protagonist, Zhang Chen, is a modern-day office worker with an ordinary but somewhat stifling life. One day, a sudden car accident sends him transmigrating back to the 1960s, where he becomes a young man named Zhang Hao. Zhang Hao was born into an ordinary rural family, but his parents were driven to suicide by a conspiracy involving collusion between officials and businessmen, and the powerful seized the family's property. Zhang Chen realizes that this era is rife with corruption and power struggles, and that his “transmigration” may not have been an accident.
