A Plain-Language Guide to Miscellaneous Morsels from Youyang

Youyang Zazu is a collection of biji stories written by Duan Chengshi during the Tang dynasty, completed around 854, in the eighth year of the Dazhong era under Emperor Xuanzong of Tang.

The work consists of 20 volumes in its main collection and 10 volumes in its sequel. In the author's own preface, he describes the book as one devoted to the strange and supernatural. Its entries cover immortals, Buddhas, ghosts and monsters, human affairs, animals, plants, food and drink, temples, and more, arranged by category. Some are tales of the supernatural, while others record rare and unusual objects from different regions and foreign lands, much like Zhang Hua's Bowuzhi from the Jin dynasty.
