Luring the Young Phoenix

[Historical ensemble cast + multiple female leads + strong female lead + coming-of-age + progression fantasy + wuxia + high martial arts + court politics + loosely based on the Song dynasty] She entered the palace at the age of four and served three emperors through four reigns. She longed for freedom all her life, yet was forced to remain imprisoned in the inner palace. Born into a distinguished family, she was the great-granddaughter of Gao Qiong, a famous general of the early Song dynasty. Her mother was the granddaughter of Cao Bin, a founding hero of the Northern Song, and her maternal aunt was Empress Cao Jingshu. At four years old, she was adopted into the palace, where she was showered with affection and treated by the emperor and empress as their own child. Unfortunately, amid factional struggles in the inner palace and at court, Zhao Zhen and Cao Jingshu arranged for her to marry Zhao Zongshi, the Renzong Emperor’s adopted son. Through careful planning, in the second year after Zhao Zongshi ascended the throne, she secured the title of Empress Dowager after he became gravely ill. Her declaration, “Men are the sky and women are the earth. If Heaven cannot tolerate women, why create them at all?” marked the beginning of her rule from behind the throne. But when faced with the new policies of the Xining Reforms, the clash between old and new ideas cost her the brother who had been by her side as she grew up. “Taotao, I’m sorry. From now on, you’ll have to stay here alone. Your brother can’t walk alongside you anymore.” Drawing on her keen political instincts, she helped Song Zhezong ascend the throne and ruled from behind the curtain. Later, under the banner of “a mother changing her son,” she secured her position, brought men such as Sima Guang, Lü Gongzhu, and Wen Yanbo into office, demoted the reform faction, and abolished the new policies. This came to be known as the Yuanyou Restoration. These political reforms brought clean government and economic prosperity to the Northern Song, and later generations praised her as “a Yao and Shun among women.” Her life was both a microcosm of Northern Song court politics and a testament to women’s struggle to break free within a feudal power structure.
