The story runs from 1274, when Kublai Khan ordered the invasion of the Song, to 1279, when the Song Dynasty officially fell after the naval Battle of Yashan. It presents the Song-Yuan war from every angle.
Beyond its battles, the novel focuses on the cultural conflict between the two sides; how the Yuan Dynasty patched together a system of rule on the foundations of the Great Song; conflicts between rulers and generals on both sides; cooperation and confrontation between rulers and ordinary people; and tensions among the people themselves.
