This story is set in the late 1980s and follows several ordinary young farmers: Douhua and Ji Yin, as well as Shuanzi and Yu'e. It recounts their lives over a few short months, from spring to autumn: their family circumstances, their love and marriages, their entrepreneurial ventures, and more. Many characters appear throughout the story. Some are the protagonists’ closest relatives, such as their parents and siblings; others are friends and neighbors, or strangers they have met only once. There are so many characters that the story has grown rather long.
