This book sees the big from the small. By describing the daily life in Xiaoyangquan Hutong, it shows the social scene and the people's suffering in that special era. The characters in the book are all very vivid, and their actions and choices reminded me of my relatives and friends around me. Just like my father, although he is usually stern, he always stands up at critical moments. This book makes me appreciate my current life more and also gives me a deeper understanding of history. I think this is a good book worth reading again and again.
After reading for more than half a month, I finally finished it. With mixed emotions in mind, the author depicts each character vividly and vividly, allowing readers to unknowingly get deeper into the story. Through a small perspective, it shows the survival changes of the people of Peiping during the eight-year Anti-Japanese War, as well as their hard struggle and patriotic feelings for the motherland.
Lao She uses delicate writing techniques to profile the crimes committed by the Japanese invasion of China and the life changes and psychological states of everyone in Yangquan Hutong through the four generations of the Qi family, including the ugly faces of the traitors. The people at the bottom are forbearing and angry. Ruixuan, as a representative of the old and new, especially represents the majority of Chinese people who want to serve the country but are unable to do so because the young and old at home need to be taken care of. They finally awaken with sadness. The Chinese people change and awaken step by step in their tolerance during the ordeal. The death of Xiao Niuer and the defeat of Japan make the ending more real. On one side, the new China is about to be reborn, and on the other side, the grief of the family appears more real and cruel. The complex five flavors make the readers' hearts burst with more vitality. We have won. Those who died will never come back, and those who survive can only live as hard as they can. Pain does not disappear with victory, but we always need to look forward and make life as good as possible
Is this an author I can rate?
Reading classics is always deeply rooted in people's hearts, immersing themselves in the situation, empathizing with them, and then deeply reflecting on why human nature is so complex. How should we view ourselves today? Reading more will enrich our lives. It will also enable us to learn from history and realize that we will be beaten if we fall behind. I am moved and admired by the efforts of our ancestors. As young people, we should also learn to find our own value. Even if it is insignificant, we can still make a slight contribution to society and the country. It is enough to do things with no regrets in your heart and yourself.
I finished reading the 699,000-word masterpiece in three days and 12 hours on December 26, 2025. Although this number of words is nothing in Tomato, Four Generations Under One House is a really long and heavy book. I have a lot of feelings, but I can't put them into words. I'm grateful for this relatively good ending. I knew some of the plots from the beginning, such as Mr. Qian throwing the bomb, such as the final victory of the Anti-Japanese War, but I watched it from beginning to end as if I had experienced it all. Mr. Lao She is really great, and I can fully understand it. Mr. Qian's thoughts went through several stages, starting with revenge for his family (I also want to throw bombs), and later doing underground work for the country's righteousness, from killing to stop killing to stopping wars for peace (Monk Mingyue's thoughts). The war of aggression against China has brought trauma and hatred to China, but there are no winners in the war. No matter whether we win or lose, it will cause great pain (both China and Japan). We are unwilling to destroy peace and no longer have a culture of tolerance for humiliation. This is the new China in Lao She's mind.
The book must be a good book, it's not something I can comment on! But it looks uncomfortable and aggrieved, and a bad breath can't come out! The fate of the country is shown through the fate of the Qi family, and the people's awakening process in the "subjugation" is shown, from peace to rebellion to victory! Long live the Chinese nation and world peace
I haven't read this novel in a long time, and it took me more than 20 days to read it. I can only say that he is worthy of being a literary giant. The characters are very delicate and realistic, especially the psychological description and the process of changes in the characters' mental behavior before and after.
Well, it was too long. I was a little impetuous and skipped to the end. Mrs. Qi is still alive. It's amazing. I admire it.

The times have brought suffering to people, but the future is bright! The war of resistance is victorious
The Peiping described by Lao She is full of fireworks and blood and tears. Four generations living under one roof was originally a symbol of happiness, but it became broken and desolate during the war. I was very moved by the kindness and tenacity of ordinary people in the book. They protect their homeland in ordinary ways, telling us that the integrity of the nation is always hidden in the bones of every ordinary person.
After reading Mr. Lao She's article, I know how bad people can be. The Erqiangzi in Luotuo Xiangzi. Four Generations Under One Roof Guan Xiaohe, Lan Dongyang, Qi Ruifeng
I have read the physical book many times, and every time I read it I am impressed by Mr. Lao She's writing style.
Reading "Four Generations Under One Roof", Mr. Lao She used simple words to outline the life of old Beijing during the Anti-Japanese War. In the Xiaoyangquan Alley, four generations of the Qi family live together, showing both the traditional conservatism of Mr. Qi and the passionate struggle of Rui Quan. The characters in the book struggled in the war, some eked out an ignoble existence, and some died heroically. It allowed me to see the cruelty of war and feel the glory of humanity. We should remember history, cherish peace, and inherit the unyielding spirit of our ancestors.
It's nice to watch, with a real process and a hopeful ending. It will get better and better, and it will really get better and better.
Every time I read it, I gain new insights, and every time I read it carefully, it is full of wisdom. The choices made by everyone in the Qi Ruixuan family are a microcosm of Beijing at that time. At first, the focus was on Yangquan Hutong and the actions of the men of the Qi family. Later, some of the men sacrificed, and the women took over, walking from the kitchen to the street, and towards the unknown world. Fortunately, the dawn has come, but my dear little girl was left in the dark, just a little bit 😭
Mr. Lao She used a gentle writing style, starting with the daily life and thoughts of small people, and wrote down the process of ordinary people from being enslaved and abused to gradually starting to fight after the country was subjugated, and inspired the people's spirit of struggle. This is the power of culture.
Good books, good books, good books, good books.
It's really good. Well written.
Books that have been read.
Every Chinese should read it. Human beings themselves have not evolved, so the shadows of people today can be found in history, and the answers to people's affairs in the future can also be found in history.
A history of the Anti-Japanese War and a history of blood and tears in Peiping. We do not want a war at any time.
The structure is clear, the language is friendly, and the characters have outstanding personalities.
Beautiful and well written
