How to classify high blood pressure
Classification by cause
1. Essential hypertension
The cause of essential hypertension is unclear, accounting for more than 90% of the total number of hypertensive patients.
2. Secondary hypertension
Secondary hypertension is high blood pressure caused by other diseases, most commonly caused by endocrine diseases and kidney diseases, followed by high blood pressure caused by tumors, brain inflammation, and trauma. Certain drugs can also increase blood pressure, such as hormonal drugs and birth control pills. According to the changes in the course of the disease, it can be divided into slowly progressive hypertension and rapidly progressive hypertension according to the onset and development of the disease. If the condition changes drastically and blood pressure suddenly rises, it may manifest as hypertensive crisis or/and hypertensive encephalopathy. Slowly progressive hypertension has an insidious onset, slow progression, and a benign course that can last for decades. It is often asymptomatic in the early stages. Rapidly progressive hypertension is more common in middle-aged and young people under the age of 40. It can suddenly change from the slow-progressive type, and there are also cases where the onset of hypertension is rapid-progressive. Hypertensive crisis can occur after slowly progressive and rapidly progressive hypertension, and can also occur in patients with secondary hypertension. Hypertensive crisis is the result of temporary strong contraction of peripheral arterioles on the basis of hypertension, leading to a further increase in blood pressure.
