The Qin Dynasty was the first dynasty to unify China. Its rise and development unfolded under three important rulers: Duke Mu of Qin, Duke Xiao of Qin, and Qin Shi Huang.
The ancestors of the Qin royal house were descendants of Zhuanxu, grandson of the Yellow Emperor. Their forefather was named Da Fei, and Shun bestowed upon him the surname Ying. During the reign of Duke Mu, Qin appointed capable people to important posts and humbly accepted advice. It destroyed twelve states and expanded its territory by a thousand li, steadily growing in strength. After Duke Mu died, however, his son Duke Xiao inherited the throne and carried out two rounds of reforms under Shang Yang.
Shang Yang's reforms brought rapid economic growth to Qin and continually strengthened its military, making Qin one of the wealthiest and most powerful states of the Warring States period. Under Duke Xiao's rule, Qin successively conquered Han, Zhao, Wei, Chu, Yan, and Qi, completing the unification of China.
In 221 BC, Duke Xiao's son Ying Zheng proclaimed himself emperor. He is known to history as "Qin Shi Huang." The Qin Dynasty established the Three Lords and Nine Ministers at the central government to oversee state affairs. Locally, it abolished the enfeoffment system and replaced it with a system of prefectures and counties. The dynasty also standardized writing, the width of axles, and weights and measures.
