The story begins with the heroine Katie. In order to escape the flashy but empty social circle of London in the 1820s, and to avoid becoming an old girl waiting to be married, Katie accepted the proposal of the taciturn bacteriologist Walter Fane. I came to read this book after reading the golden words of this book. I was not disappointed. The complexity and distortion of human nature, the conflicts in thoughts and behaviors, and the understanding of love and desire are all delicate and profound. Although it is not as attractive to me as Maugham's other books, it is not bad. It is a good book and worth recommending.
