Katie couldn't figure out whether her husband had discovered the secret of her infidelity - the turning of the doorknob during the affair, the meaningful words at dinner, and the sudden decision to take her to a cholera field, all of which made Katie's nerves tighter and tighter. Finally, she couldn't bear it anymore and planned to show off her cards and join her beloved lover after the divorce. However, when the veil is lifted, her innocence is shattered by the truth of love and the meaning of life.
Maugham vividly depicts the degradation and awakening of a woman in his calm and almost mean way - in a world of two people, she can only choose to love him or lose him to fill the emptiness in her heart; but it is only after she is in a wider world and witnesses the cruelty of life and the brilliance of human nature that she truly gains peace of mind and self-salvation.

A very good book, worth recommending.
Among them, the growth of the female protagonist is promoted to a certain extent by the male protagonist Walter (although it may be for revenge): letting Katie see Charlie's true face; taking her to Meitan Mansion (an opportunity for her to grow). But this indirect promoter remained there forever.
Although the main character in the book is Katie, what impressed me the most was Walter, not only because of his wisdom, calmness and restraint, kindness and generosity... But also because of his infatuation with Katie. Through these characters, I felt the author's writing charm.
