Synopsis

One book to reveal the many faces of life in the Qing dynasty. The Qing dynasty ruled China for nearly three hundred years, leaving us with much to marvel at and much to mourn. In recent years, television dramas set in the Qing era have become hugely popular, showing that this relatively recent period of ancient history still captures people's interest. Most people associate the Qing dynasty with corruption and humiliation. But that image reflects only its final years: the decline of every dynasty looks much the same. The true history of the Great Qing is far richer and more vivid. China has seen eras when the Five Barbarians ravaged the Central Plains and when Mongol cavalry ruled the heartland, but neither lasted long. The Yuan dynasty, for instance, endured fewer than a hundred years. The Manchus, rising from the frontier, held the Central Plains firmly for three centuries, a testament to how extraordinary their rule was. To tell the story of the Qing, we must begin with its emperors. After Nurhaci came Hong Taiji, Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong, each a ruler of exceptional vision and talent. And after the emperors, we must turn to the empresses, consorts, and princesses, who each left their mark on history in their own way. We must also tell of the princes, these most exalted and privileged men, many of whom met with misfortune. And we must explore the fates of powerful ministers and capable officials. Whether they were kingmakers or able administrators, beyond doing their jobs diligently, their fortunes depended on the favor they found with the emperor. We must also recount the tragic and happy endings of corrupt officials and honest ones. Over the Qing dynasty's three hundred years, countless corrupt officials emerged, along with a number of upright ones. And we cannot avoid the many mysteries and strange occurrences that have provided so much material for period dramas set in the Qing. The Qing dynasty achieved one political and military miracle after another. At the same time, this unusual dynasty, in which a small Manchu population ruled over the Han majority, witnessed many strange events and produced many remarkable people. Looking back today, some of these people and events seem fascinating, others laughable, some deeply frustrating, while still others remain mysteries that may never be solved. Every extraordinary person and event has a social context and a basis in reality. It is more meaningful to look beyond the strange appearances and investigate the secrets behind them. The stories of the Qing are full of splendor and tragedy, tenderness and bloodshed, wise governance and military prowess, national humiliation and lost sovereignty, cases whose verdicts seem set in stone, and mysteries with no easy answers. The stories of the Qing inspire our respect, break our hearts, and linger in our memories.
