The Tang Dynasty

The Tang Dynasty was an era of unprecedented prosperity and splendor in Chinese history, and holds an important place in the development of the Chinese nation. Over the more than two thousand years of China’s feudal history, events followed a winding course, advancing in waves. The Tang Dynasty, with its thriving economy, flourishing culture, and powerful state, is widely recognized as a high point. It was one of the great golden ages of antiquity. Its achievements in economics and culture were dazzling, and it also played an important role in the development of foreign relations. Li Yuan and his son Li Shimin seized the opportunity amid the chaos to raise troops in Jinyang, cross the Yellow River westward, and capture Chang’an, founding the Great Tang Empire. They then crushed the separatist forces of Xue Qin, Liu Wuzhou, Dou Jiande, Wang Shichong, and others one by one. Court intrigue, with open conflict and hidden daggers, ultimately led to the Xuanwu Gate Incident. Li Shimin inherited the throne and appointed people according to their abilities. The Tang Dynasty went on to conquer the Eastern Turks, Tuyuhun, Gaochang, and Xueyantuo; it secured peace with Tibet through marriage alliances and war, pacified the borderlands, united the peoples, and ushered in a flourishing age under the reign of Zhenguan. History always holds our attention. Even behind a splendid, magnificent empire like the Tang, the glint of blades and torrents of blood were never far away. Power, money, fame, and beauty are always the culprits, and always the spoils of war. In that sense, history truly is a mirror.
