Common Knowledge of Chinese History is the acclaimed work that established Lü Simian as a leading historian, and the first comprehensive history of China written in vernacular Chinese. In the history of modern Chinese historiography, Lü Simian was the only historian to make major contributions across such diverse fields as general history, dynastic history, and specialized historical studies. His research spanned all eras and covered a wide range of subjects. He excelled at comprehensive, integrated research, had a deep grounding in classical Chinese learning, and brought lively insight to the study of history.

Beginning with the origins of the Chinese people, Common Knowledge of Chinese History recounts events from one dynasty to the next, ending with the founding of the Republic of China. It condenses five thousand years of Chinese history into a single book.
