The Best-Value Edition: A General History of China

The original edition of History of China was completed in 1939 and published in two volumes. The first volume contains 18 chapters, each covering a different aspect of the development of China’s social and economic systems, political institutions, and culture and scholarship. Its 18 topics include marriage, clans, government, social classes, property, officialdom, the selection of officials, taxation, the military system, criminal law, industry, currency, clothing and food, housing and transportation, education, language, scholarship, and religion. The second volume contains 36 chapters tracing political changes in China in chronological order. To make the book easier to read, we have converted the original vertical traditional Chinese text to horizontal simplified Chinese. For a cleaner layout, we have changed the original double-line interlinear notes to single-line notes. To help readers understand and remember the material, we have standardized the Republic of China calendar dates to the Common Era. In keeping with our commitment to readers, we have carefully punctuated and proofread the entire book. Beyond that, we have made virtually no changes, so readers can experience the most original, unadulterated, and brilliant work of historical scholarship: History of China (Super Value Gold Edition).
