A History of Chinese Culture

This book was originally a set of university lectures by Lü Simian. It covers eighteen subjects: marriage, clan systems, political systems, social classes, property, government offices, elections, taxation, military systems, criminal law, industry, currency, clothing and food, housing and transportation, education, language, scholarship, and religion. Although it was published more than half a century ago, its scientific rigor, breadth, originality, clear and well-organized arguments, and accessible prose have earned it widespread praise in academic circles. It is a rare classic of Chinese cultural history. For readers who want to understand their own country's culture, this book is an exceptionally enlightening guide to Chinese culture.
