Churchill's Second World War Memoirs, Volume 1: The Gathering Storm offers a panoramic account of the European situation from 1919 to 1939, assessing events from a statesman's distinctive perspective. It analyzes and describes the profound impact of the First World War on European countries under different regimes, as well as their subsequent political and military actions.
Readers can gain a deeper understanding of how the European situation shifted under the Treaty of Versailles after the First World War, and how events such as Britain and France's policy of appeasement, sanctions against Italy, and the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War influenced the Second World War.
The book gives full consideration to the wartime policies of defeated Germany and of Britain and France, the major victors. On this basis, it details the causes of the Second World War: in 1939, Germany and Russia signed a non-aggression pact, and just one week later, on September 1, German forces launched a massive invasion of Poland, setting off a full-scale world war.
With masterful prose, the author presents readers with a comprehensive picture of Europe's turbulent course in the twenty years between the two world wars. Drawing on a wealth of precious documents and important historical records, he also demonstrates the foresight and wisdom of a great statesman and strategist.
In its citation awarding Churchill the Nobel Prize in Literature, the Swedish Academy said: “Churchill's speeches are concise in their wording, nimble in thought, incisive in argument, and deeply moving. His speeches seem to possess the power to reshape history. ... At a critical moment for human freedom and dignity, Churchill inspired people's fighting spirit with his distinctive eloquence. Perhaps it was these great speeches that built him an immortal monument.”
This book is so wonderful! With his unique perspective and writing skills, Churchill took us through the situation in Europe from World War I to World War II. His insights into history and analysis of politics were really profound and gave me a more comprehensive understanding of Europe in those twenty years. Moreover, his writing is very powerful and very enjoyable to read! However, I kind of hate the characters who pursue appeasement policies. Their short-sightedness and cowardice almost plunged the world into greater disaster. Fortunately, Churchill's wisdom and courage are admirable, and his speech is really inspiring! This book is definitely worth reading again and again.
World War II from Churchill's perspective. It should be said that Churchill was far-sighted.
