Humanity has existed for nearly a million years, but only the last 4,000 have been meaningful.

So what were we doing for nearly 25,000 years? We hid in caves, huddled around small campfires, afraid of things we didn't understand: explanations for how the sun rose, monsters with human heads and bird bodies, and stones that were alive. So we called them "gods" and "demons," and prayed to them for forgiveness and salvation.

Then there were fewer of them, and more of us. As the things we feared grew fewer, we began to view the world more rationally. Yet the inexplicable things never disappeared, as if the universe were deliberately showing us how absurd and unbelievable it could be.

Humanity can no longer live in fear. Nothing can protect us. We must protect ourselves.

"We control, we contain, we protect."
