The Ugly Sister-in-Law

The story takes place in the ancient town of Kaizhou County, now Puyang, in the 1930s. An ugly young woman from a wealthy family marries a poor young man because of her looks. On their wedding day, the groom's childhood companions make fun of him for having an ugly wife. In a fit of anger, he hangs himself. Afraid that she might poison another man to death, the ugly bride never remarries. Soon afterward, her mother-in-law dies, and a year later her father-in-law passes away, leaving behind seven or eight underage brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law. The ugly sister-in-law raises them all on her own, leads them onto the revolutionary path, and helps them find jobs. After enduring countless hardships, she gives up her position as village head for the sake of her family and returns to the village to join the agricultural cooperative. What will become of her in her later years? Read the full-length novel The Ugly Sister-in-Law to find out.
