The Chinese Man

In Men of China, the author continues to tell the story of modern and contemporary China in the midst of change. What most clearly distinguishes this book from the author's previous works is that the focus shifts from "discourse" to "people" themselves. Modern and contemporary China experienced unprecedented upheaval, yet the subjects, participants, drivers, and bearers of every change were the "people" caught in the torrents of history. From the literary world, Gong Zizhen and Liu Wendian, to politics, Zeng Guofan and Song Jiaoren; from the military, Jiang Baili and Wu Peifu, to industry, Zhang Jian and Fan Xudong; from the introspective, Master Hongyi and Wen Yiduo, to the outward-looking, Xu Jiyu and Yan Fu... The author uses forty-one kinds of people to weave together scattered fragments of China's modern and contemporary history.
