Forbidden Redemption in Middle Age

Deep in the heart of Tokyo, respectable middle-aged architect Tsumura Osamu has spent years sunk in a marriage that has long since grown barren, cold, and courteous. At a symposium on the restoration of historic architecture, he meets Shirakawa Mio, a washi paper artisan. She, too, is trapped in a rational, loveless marriage, her inner self long left misunderstood.

Their work brings them together frequently. As they talk in tea rooms, ancient temples, and old backstreets, they gradually glimpse the spiritual wasteland beneath each other's polished exteriors. A feeling that should never have taken root quietly begins to bloom, as desire and guilt pull them in opposite directions. They crave fleeting moments of kindred souls, yet fear the collapse of conventional morality, pacing back and forth along the edge of forbidden love. Desire is not the whole story. It is a brief escape from ordinary life for two lonely people in middle age, searching for a momentary glimmer of light in a shadowed corridor.
