Siheyuan: A Husband's Debts Fall on His Wife, Qin Huairu Is Handed Over as Payment

After tidying up the old things in the storeroom and clearing out everything useless, Su Mu sets aside the basins, pots, and mirrors that can still be used. He had planned to throw them away, but then he thinks: Who in the courtyard couldn't use an extra household item? Rather than let them go to waste, he might as well hold a little auction in the courtyard and sell them for a few cents to people who need them. That would be a good deed, too.

The three courtyard elders naturally won't pass up a chance to make themselves visible. After just a few greetings, people from every household prick up their ears and gather in the middle courtyard. Su Mu carries a table outside and lines up enamel basins, thermos flasks, and wooden combs. Every item is still usable, and the prices are far lower than at the supply and marketing cooperative.

But it's not just the goods that stir everyone's interest. Word has it that the storeroom Su Mu bought will be lent to the Jia family in the future. With Jia Dongxu in his current state and Jia Zhangshi's sharp tongue, everyone thinks the courtyard is in for plenty more commotion. Standing behind the table, Su Mu puts the items up for sale one by one. The prices are low, but each sale is like another declaration of the rules he has established in the courtyard.
