Siheyuan: Xu Damao, the Clear-Eyed Man

A realistic, everyday story about a traditional courtyard house, with no melodramatic hostility and an authentic period feel.

After transmigrating to 1955, he became Xu Damao from Love in the Courtyard.

He had already taken over his father's job as a film projectionist at the steel mill.

Xu Damao couldn't care less about the trivial squabbles in his little courtyard.

In this era, there were no barriers to advancement. As long as you were capable and knew how to get things done, you could climb the ladder.

It was, you could say, the best of times.

Since that's the case...

Wouldn't it be better to stay away from the courtyard's troublesome residents and work his way up to become a senior official?

Xu Damao improved the film screening process, then took the initiative to explain the latest policies and promote party and government campaigns. The commune sent him a letter of commendation signed by multiple people, and he successfully moved from a worker's position into a cadre post, resolving the issue of his official status.

He wrote the song Listening to Mom Tell Stories from the Past ahead of time and submitted it as a National Day tribute. The People's Daily reprinted it, moving Big Sister Deng and making him famous nationwide. He was appointed section chief.

He firmly backed Deputy Director Li's proposal and took on the challenge of building a branch factory from scratch, stepping into a leadership position.

Before anyone knew it, the courtyard residents could no longer even see his back.
